Title:The relationship between regular fitness training and physical self-concept : diploma thesis
Abstract:There has been a recent surge of interest on the study of physical self-concept, with several new studies in this country and elsewhere in the world. Physical self-concept in relation to fitness exercise has not been studied so much, especially not in Slovenia. The popularity of this exercise has significantly increased in recent years, so we want to investigate the connection with physical self-concept and contribute to additional insights for all involved in this process. In the theoretical part we briefly introduce self-concept in general and focus on physical self-concept: its development, gender differences and connection to physical activity. Furthermore, we introduced fitness exercise and related competitions. In the empirical part we show the connection between fitness exercise and physical self-concept. The aim of the study was to search for differences in physical self-concept between three research groups - inactive individuals, recreational fitness users and competitive fitness users - and to search for differences between the genders within these three groups. We used a quantitative approach for the study, and the data was collected with an anonymous online survey, containing the Physical self-description questionnaire (PSDQ). The study sample consists of 166 participants, aged 18-35 years, of whom 59 (35.5%) were inactive individuals, 56 (33.7%) recreational fitness users and 51 (30.7%) competitive fitness users. In case of the gender, the sample included 88 (53%) females and 78 (47%) males. The results showed differences in physical self-concept between inactive and active individuals (recreational and competitive fitness users). Significant differences of physical self-concept between genders were observed in the general group (all three study groups combined) and in the inactive group.
