Title:Analysis of types of support provided to children who have experienced grief : masters thesis
Abstract:Death profoundly and painfully interferes with one's life, especially the life of a child or adolescent, who is, seeking and strengthening support, often entirely dependent on adults in their proximity. In the event of loss and death, children, when grieving, enter an unknown stage of life and require by their side strong and solid support. The aim of this master's thesis was to determine children's reaction to hearing news about the death of a loved one. We studied children's accessibility to support in the process of coping with the death of a loved one as well as types of support and their accessibility to grieving children. The theoretical part describes the effect of death on children’s perception of and reaction to death through different developmental stages in children. It presents the grieving process in children as well as characteristics of normal and complicated grief. It also lists systemic support and assistance arrangements for grieving individuals provided on the national level. The empirical part presents a study conducted by carrying out semi-structured interviews with parents of children who have experienced grief. According to the results, support is mostly insufficient and dispersed. An important factor that lacks is clear, open and compassionate communication in the event of death and grief. In addition, support is neither evenly nor equally accessible to all grieving children. Associations providing support to people who have experienced the death of a loved one are overcrowded, those who have experienced the death of a loved one have difficulties accessing information about support and assistance available to those who are grieving, and the society is often deprecating when it comes to death and grief. This results in a lower probability for information about support and assistance intended for grieving children to be diffused. The results of the study also showed that support provided to grieving children depends on maturity and openness of adults in children's proximity.
