Title:Effectiveness of hip strengthening exercises in patello-femoral pain syndrome
Abstract:Patellofemoral pain syndrome is one of the most common causes of anterior knee pain, frequently occurring among athletes, especially women. It is characterized by pain around or behind the patella, which worsens with activities such as running, jumping, and stair climbing. Patellofemoral pain syndrome is a complex condition resulting from a combination of biomechanical and physiological factors, including improper alignment of the patellofemoral joint, weakness of the hip and quadriceps muscle, and excessive joint load. Strengthening the hip muscles, particularly the abductors and external rotators, is crucial for stabilizing the patellofemoral joint. This can improve knee imbalances and thereby reduce the load on the patellofemoral joint during activities, leading to decreased pain and improved functional abilities in patients. Exercise programs that include strengthening both the hip and knee muscles are more effective than those focused solely on the knee muscles. Addressing the patellofemoral pain syndrome effectively requires the integration of psychosocial and educational components, as well as the patient’s commitment to independently continue with regular physical activity and a healthy lifestyle after the completion of treatment.
Keywords:patellofemoral pain syndrome, hip muscles, strength exercise.
