Naslov:The position and challanges of women in the Slovenian armed forces
Opis:Through our research, we find that the position of women in the Slovenian Armed Forces is acceptable when assessing the legal, institutionalised norms or profession-specific competences that define the rules of conduct in a military organisation, while due to the living environment (family), which is more spontaneous than the nature of the professional work itself, women do not reach for the highest positions in the organisation in their careers. Only a handful of them can be found there. The military organization offers benefits to its members, such as social status, the possibility of good physical and mental preparation, lifelong learning and career development, international experience, and contact with modern security situations. However, it is a profession that requires a lot of sacrifices and often does not leave much free time. Due to a shortage of personnel and a relatively high age structure, it can also be exhausting. Female members are accepted into units equally, which is reflected in the heterogeneous composition of the units. Female members do not separate themselves from their male colleagues at work. However, they are less represented in certain positions or formation duties that we consider duties for direct combat with the enemy. There are more of them, for example, among support and medical personnel, lawyers, accountants, psychologists, and personnel officers. They have a particularly good position, or the largest percentage, in the status of military specialist. However, they have the worst position among non-commissioned officers. We believe that the organization will have to pay more attention and supplement and change regulations for training at the Non-Commissioned Officer School. The doors to the Slovenian Armed Forces are open to both genders, as reflected in their representation in the organization. However, we also see concrete opportunities for improvement, especially in the area of comprehensive care for members and their family members, which would allow women to take longer absences from their family environment.
